ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It was a perfect day for a senior send-off as the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men’s tennis team topped Michigan State 6-1 outdoors at the Varsity Tennis Center on Saturday (April 23). The match served as Senior Day for three Michigan seniors as the program honored Nick Beaty, Ryan Fu and Jonny Yaffe.

Andrew Fenty and Gavin Young made quick work of Luke Baylis and Graydon Lair at No. 2 doubles, 6-0. It was the first time the two have been paired together this season. Riding an 11-match win streak, Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty were put at No. 1 for the first time this season and delivered with a 7-5 victory. They fell behind 3-1 but rallied to win the next four games to gain a 4-3 lead. After being knotted at 5, the Wolverine duo rattle off the last two games for the win. Fu and Yaffe had quite an audience at No. 3, and the seniors led 6-5 before the match was called.

Fenty collected Michigan’s first win in singles, as the No. 66-ranked Wolverine took down Nick Williams 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Fenty never trailed in either set and went on a 5-0 run in the second set .

No. 106-ranked Young made it 3-0 Michigan at No. 5 singles over Max Sheldon. After a perfect 6-0 set, Young found himself knotted at 2-2 in the second before he took the next six games for the 6-2 set win, sealing the match win. Young leads the Wolverines in singles victories with 25.

Ondrej Styler, the highest ranked singles player for Michigan at No. 25, earned matching 6-3 wins at No. 1 to secure the team win. He is now 9-1 win playing at No. 1 singles and is 18-4 overall.

No.46 Jacob Bickersteth won his fourth straight singles match, taking out Reed Crocker 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4, and Maloney grabbed his 11th consecutive singles victory with 6-2 set wins over Lair at No. 2.

Beaty had a 12-match win streak come to an end at No. 6, falling in a 10-point tiebreaker 10-8. He won the first set 6-2 before a 7-5 loss in the second.
