Patrick McEnroe makes big call on Iga Swiatek

Patrick McEnroe has named Iga Swiatek as the clear favorite for the French Open. Swiatek, ranked at No. 1 in the world, won her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2020 French Open. Swiatek failed to defend her French Open title last year after losing to Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinal.

Swiatek has won her 22 last matches as she claimed victories in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami. Swiatek also won two Billie Jean King Cup matches last week and this week reached the Stuttgart final. “It’s very hard to envision anyone defeating Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros this year.

She’s that good,” McEnroe tweeted.

Swiatek aims for a big clay season

After completing the Sunshine Double, Swiatek admitted she will be extra motivated to do well at the French Open again.

“It’s just more fun for me to play on clay, and I always have that extra motivation before Roland Garros, so I’m pretty sure it’s going to happen also this year, and I’m just gonna be working hard. But the results we are going to see.

I can’t promise anything,” Swiatek said. Swiatek has made some adjustments to her game and now she is a dominant force on hard as well. Swiatek feels she can only benefit from the adjustments and changes she has made to her game.

“I mean I’ve been playing on clay for two days, so I don’t know,” Swiatek told WTA Insider. “But for sure having more variety and being able to attack and also being able to play the same kind of tennis I was playing last year, like higher top spin, having these two options is really helpful because I can adjust and choose the best kind of game to play against my opponent.

“Honestly, I think I can do both things and the biggest challenge is going to be when I’m going to choose the right tactics or right skill. So I feel more confident right now and I feel like I have just more options. It’s kind of the same as it was on hard court.”
